Thank you and Volunteering!
Thank you to everyone who was able to make it to Conferences! It was lovely to see you and talk about your child.
If you missed out on coming, please email me at milnelson@cbe.ab.ca and I will be able to set up a time to see you after school.
If anyone has received their security clearance and filled out our Volunteer forms, I am looking to have a schedule for Volunteering within our classroom starting in the New Year! If you are interested please email me or call after school and we can chat.
We have a program called Wee Reads with Calgary Reads and are looking for Volunteers for that. It is a time commitment of 20-30 minutes each week reading with 1 or 2 children. The children will be from K, Grade 1 or Grade 2. You will be matched with the same children each week. You may play a game or build other literacy skills with them as well. I have volunteer sheets for this and can send them home with your little one.
For Wee Reads there is a mandatory meeting on Tuesday, December 15th at 5:30pm here at the school.
For any information, please do not hesitate to email or call me.

Hope I get to see you all tonight or tomorrow! Mr. Rattan would love to have some visitors as well! Please call the office to book with him (403) 777-6610. Or see if you can just pop by while you are here.
Some students came home with books from the book fair. I love to see their thirst for knowledge!
Please read with your child each evening for about 10-20 minutes. Reading each day will help with their reading comprehension and fluency. Send them on a word hunt for some of our spelling words.
Have a glorious weekend!

Mrs. Nelson was sick today! We had a fabulous sub, Ms. Fillmore! I am sure all the students had a wonderful time with her.
Picture retakes are tomorrow, November 18th. Students are asked to bring their original proof sheets to the camera if possible, so that the photographer can then see how to improve the photos for the students. We will also do photos of any students who didn’t have their pictures taken on original photo day.
Stay Healthy :)

Good Afternoon! We have 3 staff members who are participating in MOVEMBER! They are all growing moustaches in support of Movember which is an organization dedicated to promoting mens health and finding a cure for prostate cancer.
To help raise funds the three of them will have a little competition in which students and staff can vote for a small donation.
Each vote will cost $1.00 and you can vote as often as you like. You are voting for the one of us you believe has the worst stache. Each week some Mavericks will update a poster located in the front of the school with how many votes each person has. I am asking students to give their donations to their home room teacher. On the last day of November we will determine who has the most votes and the class that raised the most money will get to choose an outfit of their choice that the losing teacher will have to wear all day on Monday Dec 7th. But we can only make the silliness a goal if we raise $300 as a whole school. That's less than $1 per student!
Let's help raise money for Prostate Cancer!!!!!!!
Today, we had another fire drill. This time it wasn't as cold and we didn't have to stay out as long. We did a GREAT job!
THANK YOU to all that donated food to the Mavericks to reach their goal. I hope they made it. I will update you next week about their success!

Happy Monday....err we mean Thursday! It felt a lot like a Monday today! We practiced our phonics this morning and had a long chat about Fire Alarm/Drill Safety and Lockdown Safety.
We had an unexpected Fire Drill due to a mechanical issue with the system. The fire department was at our school before everyone was outside to our meeting point. It was nice to know they quickly respond! We had to stay outside for while the Fire Department checked our school and it took a long time. We were pretty chilly. As soon as we got into class we put our jackets on and warmed up while we chatted.
On that note, please help your child to wear a long sleeve shirt or have a sweater to wear in case we have another alarm when it is chilly!
We exchanged our Library books today! Please take time to read them with your child and help them find words that they know.
Scholastic Orders are due tomorrow! Please send in what you have. I will send home our December order forms soon and do a final order before Christmas. (Already???)

Today we had our Remembrance Day Assembly to remember those who fought for us and who still fight for us. It was a lovely assembly. Please take time with your child to have a moment of silence tomorrow at about 11 am. We will still accept donations for poppies until Friday.
There is still time to bring in food donations. We have until Friday. The Mavericks goal can be reached if we each bring 2 or 3 items.
Mr. Sadowsky came into our class this morning and read us a story about a pig that loves buttered toast. It was funny!
Today we continued to work on our Flanders Field picture. We finished coloring our poppies with crayon and then we painted over top of them with green watercolor. They look beautiful!
We practiced some yoga this afternoon after we finished our art! We received a book today from the TD Bank. Every student in Canada will receive this book. It is a story full of imagination.
Library day on Thursday.
Important Dates:
Nov 11 - No school
Nov 13 - Scholastic Order Due

First Snowfall!
Well I think it's official. We had our first real snowfall last night and today. Just a reminder that students need mitts and toques and maybe a scarf to keep warm. Snowpants are fine as well, but they do take a while for children to put on. Help them practice this at home.
Our Remembrance Day Assembly is tomorrow at 10:35/40 ish until 11:25am. You are most welcome to come and share in the spirit of remembering those who have fought and still do fight for us. Students will receive a sticker poppy and donations are gladly accepted.
Please send or bring a food bank donation and lets help our Maverick Leadership team reach their goal.

We had a busy day! We worked on our Literacy and Math Centres, we practiced our phonics by saying their sounds, listening to songs and saying a word with the sound in it. We also had PE, we made some tissue paper Poppies for our Remembrance Day Celebration and then we had quiet free time! It was a lovely day!
We are getting really good at reading and will soon start our Home Reading program. Reading daily to your child will help them greatly. Help them search for words or sounds that they already know. Also helping your child write their name with lowercase letters will help them learn their lowercase letters. (except the first initial of course, that's always uppercase)!
Please remember to send in Food Bank donations by Tuesday. The Maverick Leadership team, would like to line all the hallways of the school with food! Please help them accomplish their goal.
Have a WONDERFUL weekend!

We celebrated a birthday today and Mickey Mouse wished our friend a Happy Birthday!
We had library today, and most of us are bringing home 2 books to share with you. We can keep them for the whole weekend and bring them back next week. A few of us still need to return our books, this is a friendly reminder. :)
We did literacy centres today and number order and we had Music and PE. Days just seem to whiz right by. Mrs. Nelson also read us a funny story. It was called "More Parts". It was about a boy who thought he had to give his hand to his Dad when his Dad said, "Give me a hand." The little boy didn't realize the Dad just wanted his help. It was super silly!

Today we learned a little bit about the Poppy and why we wear it! Discuss with your child reason's why you wear the Poppy. We coloured poppies and are going to make a tissue paper poppy wreath for our Assembly next week.
We logged on to Raz Kids with a friend and we got to listen to, read and take a quiz on a few stories. Mrs. Nelson is sending home our login information. They have been laminated to safeguard them from spills. :)
Picture money is due on November 6th if you are ordering pictures.
Mrs. Nelson is sending home more Scholastic Order forms. The due date will be on November 13th. I will do one more order before Christmas, probably the first week of December.

Today we discussed playground safety and that we must use our scarves or mitten or toque string appropriately. We talked about not tying anything to the playground equipment because it could put us in danger. Please discuss with your child as you feel prompted.
Today we were able to explore our Literacy Centres and Mrs. Nelson continued to show us some of our new Math Centres. We should be able to be in full swing with our centres next week. This gives opportunity for Mrs. Nelson to work with us in small groups or 1:1with each of us to help us in our specific areas.
We had a new student start with us yesterday and he fits in already! It's like he has always been apart of our class.
The Mavericks of Beddington (Grade 6 Leadership group) are collecting non perishable food items for the food bank until Nov.10th. If you would like to send it with your child that would be lovely, or if you are coming to the assembly on November 10th at approximately 10:30am, you can bring it with you then.

Happy Early Weekend! I hope you all have a safe and treat filled weekend!
Today was so short it just flew right by. We had calendar, went to the library, did our Outside the Box drawing and then we had an assembly to say goodbye to Mrs. Rasmussen who is retiring from teaching. We will miss her and all her sassiness!
We finished our day off by getting our cute Grade 1 pictures from LifeTouch and of course we ended with a little Dance Party! Our heart rates were high, high, high!
Thank you to all the parents who have sent in their ziploc bags, headphones and your child's baby picture! Your support is absolutely amazing!

Please send in a baby picture of your child this week. We are learning about us in our world for Social Studies and we would like to do an art project about "Us." We would like to put these photographs up in our classroom and make special frames for them (glue may be used).
Please send in a large Ziploc bag for home reading bags.
We are going to be listening to stories on the ipad or computer and it can get really noisy in the class with everyone listening. If you are able to send in a headband type set of headphones that would be wonderful! We only have a few in the class! (these would stay at school).

They are funny kids!

Today in Math, we made lots of patterns using lots of different objects. We used: rubber coloured animals, coloured dominoes, Link-its, shapes and unifex cubes. After we made a pattern we had to copy it into our Math book. It was a lot of fun.
This afternoon, we made an Initial Flag. We wrote our first initial in a block letter and then we used tissue paper to make a pattern along the edge. We wrapped the tissue paper on our pencil and dipped it in glue and then stuck it on our flag! Doing this helps our hands get stronger! We didn't notice, but Mrs. Nelson helped our hands get stronger so they don't hurt as much when we write! We are now Superhero Hand Writers!!!!!!

Today we finished up our beautiful artwork! We cannot wait to show you what we created with our Art Resident, Mrs. Stables.
We worked on our phonics. Sounding out words is hard. A great way to help your child learn to spell is to have them spell words out phonetically. That means only writing the sounds they hear. For example, School would be accepted as "scul" "skol" "skewl" "skool" etc.
Reading to your child each night is important and can help them in their own reading progress. Going over letter sounds and formation would also be beneficial. If you need any ideas please send me an email at milnelson@cbe.ab.ca
We will send "Home Reading" home soon. Please send in a large Ziploc bag for your child to bring to and from school.
We discussed many different "Community People" and why they are important to our community. Ask your child about who they picked and why they are important.
Please send a baby picture of your child in by Friday October 23rd. We are learning about us in our world for Social Studies and we would like to do an art project about "Us." We would like to put these photographs up in our classroom and make special frames for them (glue may be used).

We are Swimmers!!!!!
Today was our first day at Swimming Lessons. We did really good. Our class was one of the best classes on the bus. We did GREAT in our lessons. We blew bubbles, we jumped off the edge into the pool, we practiced our floating Starfish and we had a wonderful time! If your child is missing anything or has something that isn't theirs, please let us know and we will do our best to fix it!
We had Library today. Please read your child's book with them each night.
We learned about Raz Kids and Mrs. Nelson will give us our username and passwords soon!
We sang a fun song about our city, province and country. It will take some practice to get it down.

Our Terry Fox Run is coming up on Wednesday September 30th at 12:45. Please consider donating a Toonie for Terry to support the Terry Fox Foundation. Please send donations in by Wednesday Sept. 30th. Our class has been watching videos about Terry Fox. We are learning that he had to go through a hard time with cancer. He had his leg cut off, amputated. He wanted to run across Canada to raise money for Cancer Research. Although Terry had to stop his run because the cancer spread to his lungs, we can help Terry accomplish his goal by participating in our School Terry Fox Run.
Talk with your child about who they could run for. Some will run for Terry and some will run for Family members or pets.
