Goodbye!!!

It's been such a wonderful year in Grade 1! Thank you to all of you for trusting me with your child and for allowing me to watch them learn and grow! I am always amazed at who they become by the end of the year! I'm excited to see them continue to grow!

If by chance you have forgotten anything, or rather, your child has forgotten anything, we will still be at the school Mon, Tues and Wed morning until about 12.

Have a fabulous summer!!!

Last Full Day!!!!

Tomorrow is a half day! Remember to pick up your child at 11am. They will have things to bring home. We sent some things yesterday and will send more today!

We said Farewell to the Grade 6's in an assembly this afternoon.

Tomorrow we will say goodbye to some teachers who will be leaving.

It has been a lovely year here in Grade 1. We have learned so much and will take most of it with us into Grade 2.

Wednesday, June 22, 2016

The end is almost near! As we get ready for Summer I want to stress the importance of reading Daily with your child. Please keep this up over the Summer and your child will be geared up and all ready for Grade 2.

We watched a bit of Inside Out today. We will finish it tomorrow.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Happy Summer Solstice!!!!

Sorry for the late post!!! The Internet is  being funny lately. Tomorrow is Dress as your Favourite Book Character!

We wrote letters to our Grade 2 teacher today. It was all about us. We have come a long way in our writing! You should be very proud!

Happy Summer Solstice!!!!

Today we finished our Zoo Enclosures and were able to bring them home. Have your child tell you all about them and the different components the enclosure needed.

We were able to go onto a Literacy Centre when our Zoo Enclosure was complete and most of us chose to work on puzzles. Puzzles are so good for your brain. Keep up the awesome work!

This afternoon we watched a presentation from the Social Media Club. They prepared videos on a variety of topics like, religious discrimination, bullying and a few others. They were very well done!

Mrs. Nelson read us a bunch of stories today as well. We are still reading Where the Red Fern Grows and we really hope we have time to get to the end. Mrs. Nelson may have to skip a couple parts!

Special Note***
On Wednesday the school will have a spirit day to end the year off with some Beluga pride. Earlier in the month we collected donations for the Fort McMurray forest fires and we raised over $700! Thanks to these generous donations we would like to extend the invitation to dress up for spirit day to everyone in the school to make sure no child is excluded from showing their Beluga spirit. If you would like, you can come to school on Wednesday dressed as your favourite book character!
- costumes may not included masks or any props that will distract from learning or cause issues at recess
- Costumes may not be gory or violent in nature and must adhere to the schools dress code

Yesterday and today Mrs. Nelson came in the morning. We had Ms. C in the afternoons. Mr. Nelson is doing really well and Mrs. Nelson was happy she could help him recover. Thank you to all your children for their patience in the irregular schedule.

Donations for Fort McMurray will be accepted until early next week!
We have been working on writing about our favourite characters for our special Spirit Day on June 22nd. Mrs. Nelson taught that we don't have to wear a costume we have bought, we can use things we already have. For example, if we want to dress up as Clifford the Big Red Dog, we should wear a red shirt and red pants. We can make dog ears and attach them to a hat or headband and paint our nose black! Tada!!!! We are Clifford! Try to be creative in your dress up.

EVERY STUDENT gets to dress up!!!! We shared our coins that were brought in and there was exactly enough for every single student in our class! That's pretty lucky! So because we shared our donations with each other, everyone gets to dress up on Spirit Day!

Zoo Field Trip forms came home yesterday! Please attach payment, fill them in and send them back to school. We need about 4 Volunteers for the Zoo! I think we have a couple already. We can have more as well, but minimum of 4.

Our in-class Teacher's Pet Field trip is coming up next Wednesday and we still need 3 Volunteers for that!

Today we did a special 2D and 3D shape project. We filled in all the vertices and sides for 2D shapes and all the vertices, faces and edges for 3D shapes. Ask your child about a particular shape. Their homework this weekend is to find all the different shapes around their house or wherever you are. If you can bring it in that would be great (we already have a toilet paper roll though ;) Or just take a picture and email me at milnelson@cbe.ab.ca

We worked hard this afternoon on a special project for a special person in our life. I hope you Mom's have a wonderful Mother's Day! Your children love you so much and are so excited to give you your gift!

“ School Council is in great need of volunteer drivers and collectors to help with this Saturday’s bottle drive.   Proceeds will go to fund the Grade 6 Farewell evening.  If you are able to volunteer,  please contact Meghan Cooper (403) 613-1516 or meghanbuchanan@shaw.ca.    If you are unable to volunteer but have bottles/cans to contribute, you are welcome to drop them at the school parking lot on Saturday, May 7 between 9 am & 3 pm, or leave a marked bag on your doorstep for pickup.  Thank you!”

Library Day tomorrow! Please help your child return their books, so that they can get new ones!

Today in Music we practiced our actions for our Spring Concert. We cannot wait to share with you our beautiful songs.

We talked about keeping our brains healthy. The most important thing to do when we feel sad, angry or worried, is to talk with someone. A friend, a teacher or our family! While it is ok to feel these feelings, we cannot let them overtake us and replace the good things in our lives.

We did ANOTHER 3D shape today. Ask me what it is called. I'm sure we can find LOTS of this shape in our houses.

Please remember to return your child's field trip form with the $5. Also, please include your child's name on the form.

Hats on for Mental Health TOMORROW!!!!!

Don't forget to wear your favourite hat tomorrow to show support for Mental Health.

Scholastic Orders came home today! They are due back on the 12th. Get ready for Summer with lots of good books to read at home.

A Field Trip Form for Storybook Theatre is coming home today! Please fill it out and return it as soon as possible. They must be returned by Monday, May 16th. The cost for this field trip is $5. We will need a couple volunteers as well.

Today we made another 3D shape. See if you can find it in your home! I think you will be able to find LOTS of this shape!

We had an impromptu lesson on the Kermode Bear (it is a white black bear). They live on the Northern Coast in the rain forests of BC and are very rare. Students were very interested by this. Research at home to learn more about this unique bear!

Wednesday is Hats on for Mental Health! Students may wear hats to school to show support for mental health. We will do some discussion around this, but please make sure to chat with your child regarding mental health.

Jersey Day!!!!

We had a GREAT Jersey Day!!! Thank you to everyone that was able to participate!

This morning we read a book with the Grade 2's about Saving Energy! Electricity, gas, propane...that kind of energy. Our own energy is fine. We have to spend 30 minutes this evening without using any energy except from our own body! Try to play a board game without the lights on (maybe a candle?) or walk to a park and play frisbee. No TV, tablets/iPads, computers, video games etc...

I'm sure you will all be able to do an excellent job!

Mrs. Nelson will be away tomorrow. Please remind your child to be respectful and listen to the substitute teacher!

We have our 10 word Spelling Review tomorrow! Please help your child practice this evening. The words are:
when
live
lot
morning
thing
happy
new
want
help
oh

Please continue to READ READ READ for our Reading: Give it a Shot! Calgary Flames program.

If you have any extra books you are no longer using we have 2 great programs that could use them!!!
1) Wee Reads Parent Council Book Drive - these books will be sold as a fundraiser for the Wee Reads Program. A notice was sent home last week.
2) Our Community Library Box in the front foyer of our school. You can look in there for a book you may like or leave your books for others to enjoy!
