Happy Hanukkah!!!!

Today Mrs. Nelson showed us a video about Hanukkah! It was cool to learn about why they light 8 candles. Ask me to tell you about it! Hanukkah starts this evening at sunset.

We did Caroling in the gym as a whole school. We sang lots of fun Christmas Songs.

We had free time with our Math Centres and we did Student of the Day! We also finished our letters to Santa. Mrs. Nelson is going to mail them today! We also did brain gym and exercised in class!

Today was back to our normal schedule. We made a show for good and bad choices. We got to show Mrs. Nelson good choices and bad choices. It was really funny!

We wrote notes to Santa about how we take care of others, how we take care of place and how we take care of our learning. We also read a story about Ramadan and tomorrow we will hopefully read a story about Hanukkah! Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

We had a fun relaxing day! We worked on our Math Centres for the final time before Winter Break and we got to show Mrs. Nelson how we make and label patterns.

We got to enjoy the band from Sir John A. McDonald school this morning and then this afternoon we watched the Polar Express as a whole school.

We talked about how we felt before and after our dance performance last night. Some people felt nervous and shy or happy and excited before hand. Afterwards, most of us felt proud and brave. Mrs. Nelson said we looked like Professional Dancers! It was AWESOME!!!! Thanks so much for all your support!

We did not have time today for our Spelling Review so we will do that on Monday perhaps. The words are: at, you, can, on, is

We had a busy day! We worked on Math Centres! We are getting so good at creating patterns. We checked the pattern we made with a rubric to find out how many stars it was worth.

We worked on our Spoken Word for our Winter Concert and we got to watch all the classes that are performing this evening! They are really good! We can't wait to show you our dance!

Today we had a spelling review and then searched for words in magazines. We highlighted any spelling words we could find. There sure was a lot!

This year, Beddington Heights School is hosting a sock drive for the homeless and you can help!

Simply drop off your donation of new or gently used clean socks into the collection bin (near the office) until December 17th. The socks will then be donated to The Calgary Drop In Centre to help keep the feet of Calgary’s most vulnerable citizens warm, dry and healthy. 

Did you know? 

Not having access to clean socks can be a serious health risk?

Wow! This school year is sure going fast! Today we got our new spelling words. They are:

We are bringing home a new practice sheet. This sheet can stay at home and we should practice everyday.

We had our Dance Artist come into our class and teach us about Spoken Word. It is like a rap and a poem all in one. Our Spoken Word is about Kindness! We can't wait to share it with you on December 11th.

 We have Scholastic Book fair here this week. We will make a wish list with prices to share with you. Maybe if we work hard at home we can earn money to buy some books!

For Heritage Park passes I have one family of 5 and we didn't write the name on it. If it was you, please email me. mldavy@cbe.ab.ca 

It looks like we may be able to give 3 passes per family for the ones who have responded. I will give those out on Thursday this week.

Today we worked hard and earned some free time in the afternoon. We chose to play math games and some literacy games too.

Today we celebrated a birthday in our classroom. We watched a few silly birthday videos. One song was stuck in our head all day long!

We continue to work on our dance moves in Dance Class. We are having lots of fun.

This afternoon we worked on Social Studies and using different symbols to represent different places in our school.

We had Library today and a few of us forgot our books at home. Please send them tomorrow.

Today we started our Hip Hop Dance class! It was so much fun! We learned some cool moves and listened some awesome music. Mrs. Nelson showed us our song on the Smart board! We will practice hard every day!

Today we  COLOURED ON THE CARPET....AND OURSELVES!!!!! Ask me about it!

In Socials we learned what a school is. We have a red card with the definition. Please practice with me so I can remember.

Good Afternoon!

Today we started our weekly spelling! We are bringing home a letter and a practice sheet. These do not need to come back to school. We will practice our new words every day and then have a review and put them on our Class Word Wall! Then I will be expected to spell these words correctly in my work. Our new words are:

*and is a word family ending! Try to find other words that end in "and".
to & the are what we call "sight words". They do not follow the typical sounds of the alphabet.

Today Mrs. Nelson was back! Thanks for being so good with the substitute yesterday! She had a lot of fun in our class!

Today we did brain gym, literacy centres, math centres, PE, music and phonics fun! We also guessed some more teacher art in the Learning Commons! In PE we are learning Volleyball! It is a lot of fun!

Monday, November 17th, 2014

Today we were missing a bunch of friends, we hope to see them soon! The rest of us had a wonderful day. We played a name game, we listened for a sound in our name and found others who had a similar sound.

We used our Math Centres today and we guessed what teacher created what art piece in the Learning Commons. A few guessed Mrs. Nelson's correctly!

An important notice is coming home today!!!! Please discuss this with your child!

The Learning Plans that came home on Friday do not need to be returned to the classroom. They are for your records and information. We will review and sign them at our December Conferences!

Well that was sure a short week!!!

Today we learned about our new Math Centres and got to play with them for a bit! We can't wait to really get into them next week! We worked on our Literacy Centres too and are really gaining a lot of stamina staying in our stations for longer periods of time. In the afternoon we made a map of the school and talked about different symbols that could be used.

Winter weather has arrived!  We would like to remind students to dress properly for the cold weather.  Each school day, students should be wearing a warm coat that zips up (rather than just a hoodie), warm boots, a warm hat or ear muffs, and warm mittens or gloves.  Unless the weather is colder than -20 degrees, all students stay outside until the bell in the morning, and go outside for both morning and lunch recess.  We appreciate your support to ensure that all students are dressed properly and are keeping warm during the times they will be outside.  Thanks!

Pulse Dance Studios is coming to Beddington Heights through the generosity of the Alberta Foundations for the Arts and our School Parent Council. In preparation for our schools Winter Celebration, all students will be working with Dance Artists, Visual Artists , and spoken word instructors coming to us through Pulse studios. Our students will also be participating in the preparation of music for the celebration through their work with Mr. Rattan our school’s music teacher. The Winter Celebration and Spoken Word Performance will be a Multi-evening performance. Performances will be on Wednesday Dec 10^th and Thurs Dec 11^th, 2014.  Please check for your child’s teacher’s name to determine when your child is performing:

Today we learned 2 new games for our Literacy Centres. We also worked on Student of the Day. It was so cold out today, we stayed in the gym at lunch and watched a movie! 

During Social Studies we separated ourselves into different groups we are all a part of. We are all part of so many different groups!

Today we remembered the soldiers who fought, or who still fight, for our Country to be safe, peaceful and free! After the assembly we drew pictures that reminded us of Remembrance Day.

We had a colour quiz for Science today! It was to complete a colour wheel with primary and secondary colours.

November 6th, 2014

Today we discussed healthy and unhealthy food with a Grade 2 buddy! We drew pictures and they wrote the words. We cut out our own shapes and worked on patterns in Math. In Science we explored what would happen when we use black or white paint! We love painting!

Students can wear their cubs/scouts or sparks/brownie outfit to school tomorrow for the assembly!

November 5th, 2014

Today we did Making Words! We made lots of 2, 3, 4 and 5 letter words with the letters a b l s t! As, me what the 5 letter word was! In Music we continued to work on Mi So La! We worked on Math and are getting really good at Race to 100!!!! We played Volleyball in PE. We are learning how to catch and pass the ball!

We continue to talk about Remembrance Day and why we wear poppies. Ask me why I wear a Poppy!!!

Students  can wear Brownie, Sparks or Scout uniforms on Friday for our Remembrance Day assembly!

Welcome November!

It started out pretty snowy! We hope you are all being safe when you play in the snow. Remember at school there are no snowballs allowed. Please speak with your child about safety with snow.

We coloured in Poppy's and read a story about why we wear Poppy's today. If any families have stories  of a family member participating in a war, please send them to school this week.

We worked on Student of the day and he likes lions. We also finished our Letters of the Day!!!! Yahoo!!!! We also drew a picture of our Halloween weekend. Some of us labeled it, while others wrote sentences.

We played Monster Tag in PE and it was fun!!!

We had a wonderful Black and Orange Day!!!! We did centres, played in the Learning Commons, learned a new Math game, listened to a story, got tired in PE, did spooky connect the dots for math and ended with a Dance Party!!! We sure do love our Class Dances!

October is just whizzing by! We are working hard in class and becoming great workers and readers! We worked on our Student of the Day and the letter W. W vibrates and we feel air come out of our mouths too! It's a funny letter!

In Socials we read a poem called "Belonging". Then we talked about different groups that we belong to! As a class we belong to SO MANY different groups!

We had library today and almost everyone remembered to bring back their books! Great job everyone!

We worked on the letter V today! It feels funny when we put our hand on our mouth and make the /v/ sound! It also makes our throats feel funny! Mrs. Nelson says that is vibration!

We worked on our Math and most of us finished that too! We put numbers with dots and animals and words! It was hard work, but we DID IT!!!!!!!

In gym we did yoga and listened to a story about animals doing yoga positions! It was cool! Swimming report cards coming home for most kids today. (some are missing)

We made it half way through our week! We continued to work hard today on our Math assignment and tried out our Literacy Centres too! We are excited to play Spot It!!!! It's a fun new game that Mrs. Nelson showed us how to play!

We are still learning how to control our bodies and listen to all our teachers. Some of us had a hard time in PE and class! We are working hard to get better!

Today was our first day in Open Commons! That means that we got to play in the Learning Commons during our Lunch Recess instead of going outside! We wore our hats and had a wonderful day!

Tuesday October 21st, 2014

Tomorrow is HAT DAY!!!!! You can wear any kind of hat you choose! This is our reward for raising money for the Terry Fox Foundation.

We worked hard today on Math! We matched numbers 1-12 to matching dots, pictures and words! Tomorrow we will cut them out and paste them into our Math booklets.

Today was our first day to play Benchball for Intramurals! We had a lot of fun! We will play every Tuesday after we are done eating lunch!

We are really building up our stamina for how long we can quietly read before our bodies need to move! We take lots of body breaks and do Brain Gym! Ask me to show you one thing we do during Brain Gym.

Please try to return library books for Wednesday, so we can take out new books on our Thursday library day!

We worked hard in Phys ED. We learned how to do squats, push ups, sit ups and planks! It was hard work!

We had a normal day filled with normal activities. We worked our brain during Brain Gym and worked hard on making new words! We learned how to make a 5 letter word today! Ask me what it is!!!!! It starts with the letter 'H'

Today we crammed a lot of work into a short amount of time. We worked on the letter T and had Student of the Day! At the end of the day we had a Dance Party!!!!! It is a lot of fun!

Today was our first regular day since before swimming! We had PE this afternoon and played Dodgeball! It was a lot of fun!

We also had library today and some of us forgot our books. I think we will try to get our books back for each Wednesday and then we will know who can take out books on Thursday!

We also practiced filling our friends buckets! We showed our classmates how to do it! We can just smile at someone to fill their bucket, and guess what??? We fill our bucket too!!!

Today was our last day of swimming! We all had such a great time! We learned so much and did things we thought we were too scared to do on the first day!

Welcome back from a beautiful long Thanksgiving Weekend! I hope you all had a wonderful time with your families.

Tomorrow is our LAST DAY of Swimming!!!! They have done so well and have really grown as swimmers!

Today we worked on our Daily 5....we are getting so good at it! We read some poems today and are starting a Poetry Journal too!

Our third day of swimming was fantastic! We are getting so comfortable in the water and are learning so much. Day 4 of swimming tomorrow!

We talked about different colours and our letter of the day was Q! We learned that Q always sticks with the letter U.

We had library time today, and most of us remembered to bring back our books. Awesome Job!!!

Today was our second day of swimming. We had an awesome day! We didn't get a fancy bus today, we had a normal school bus! A lot of us swam in the deep end, but we had life jackets so we weren't scared for long!

We worked on the letter P and we learned that every word has a vowel!

October 7th, 2014

This morning we celebrated a birthday in our class and watched a silly birthday video! We laughed and laughed! Then we went swimming! We only left behind a few things, so pretty good for our first day! We got to ride a fancy bus to the pool. We had our own soft and cushy seats with seatbelts. It is the kind of bus you take when you travel!

We had an awesome first day of swimming! We were a little nervous and scared to start out, but by the end we were cold and happy!

Friday is PICTURE DAY!!!!! I can't wait to see those beautiful grins!

Monday, Monday, Monday

It was a crazy day! We did a lot of things today. We did our Daily 5 and are learning how to label pictures when we are unsure about writing sentences. We worked on our Wall Alphabet and it is almost ready to go up! It will make our classroom look great!

Reminders:
Swimming starts TOMORROW!!!!! Tuesday morning is our first day of swimming. Students should wear their swimsuits to school to speed up changing times. (remember to send underclothing for afterwards)

***Please speak with your child about changing quickly and not waiting for a private stall. There are not enough stalls for each person.***

Picture Day - say Cheese :-) Friday October 10th (this Friday) We will have our pictures taken before we go swimming!

Home reading bags should be returned daily. Students are learning to exchange their own books at appropriate times.

We had Library today, if there are any Library books at home, please send them back right away. We had Music today and learned a song called Oliver Twist. We also learned how to cross the street properly by using the 3 P's...Point, Pause, Proceed! We should always use the 3 P's when crossing the street. Our letter of the day was M for man, Mom and monkey!!!

- Please send back any intramurals forms by next Friday, October 10th.
- Swimming starts next Tuesday Oct 7 and we are still looking for any male volunteers that have their security check already done for this school year.

Wednesday October 1st, 2014

Welcome to October!!!!! We learned about why leaves change colour in the fall and we discussed about the different colours we see! We continue to work on our letters and printing and I see some great progress in Grade 1! We had a desk clean up.....my oh my we can collect lots of things in our desks!

This week is Calgary School Traffic Safety Week.  Please visit http://tsk.capsc.ca for lots of great tips about how to keep children safe in traffic.  As a class, we will be reviewing how to cross the street safely, and how to be safe when coming to school.  Your child should be able to tell you more as the week goes on.

Monday, September 29th, 2014

Today we made our own patterns with a partner in math and found some patterns in our class. We shared our patterns with the class. We worked on our Student of the Day and played two new games in PE.

We start swimming next Tuesday, October 7th!!!! We are the second group to swim so wearing bathing suits under our clothes to school would be fine, just make sure to send necessary items for after! :)

I am still in need of a couple Digital Citizenship forms, if you need an extra one please let me know and I can send another one home. Your child needs this signed in order to use laptops, computers or iPads this school year! Thanks :)

Happy Friday! September 26th, 2014

Over the weekend it would be great if each student went for a walk and grabbed a few leaves for a science and art project we will do next week. Please have them in on Monday or Tuesday!

We have our Home Reading for the weekend...we didn't forget today!  Some of us still haven't brought back our bags....we need to bring them back EVERY DAY so we can get new books to read and work with.

Today we sang a fun song in music called Bernie Bee! We continued our Student of the Day and worked on our Daily 5. Please help me to remember to take my Home Reading to school EVERY DAY!!!!  (oops we forgot to take some of them....we will also work on remembering them from school too!)

Tomorrow is EARLY DISMISSAL!!!!!! We will get out of school at 11 am. Please don't forget me :'-(

Wednesday September 24th, 2014

Today we all participated in the Terry Fox Run, The Marathon of Hope. We drew ourselves running with Terry and talked about how Terry had cancer and had to have his leg amputated....that's a big word for us. Most of us felt like we should keep running no matter what, even when we were tired we kept on running.

Our class raised $ 46.10. We will still take donations until Friday. So far the school has raised more than $600 for the Terry Fox Foundation!

September 23rd, 2014

We had a great day today! We read "The Little Red Hen" a few times this morning and then we got to act it out for our classmates! Your children are quite the little actors!!!!

We talked a bit about the Terry Fox Run, which we will be participating in tomorrow (Wednesday) as a whole school community. We will be doing lots of Terry Fox activities in the morning and our run is in the afternoon. Donations are welcome! Our school goal is $1600....if we reach it then all the female teachers, me included, will be dying our hair a funky colour!!!!!! Aaaaaaah!

We sent home lots of scholastic book orders for you to look threw. Please have them back by September 30th if you choose to make a purchase.

There were other forms sent home for 3 magazine subscriptions....even if you do not want the subscription, please sign and return the forms because we can get FREE PRIZES for our class!

Thank you so much to those parents who I was able to meet last week at Meet the Teacher! I will contact those I have yet to meet with, to set up an appointment.

Today we cheered for our last 4 Students of the Day! Then we found letters that were the same in some of those names!

We also worked on our Letter of the Day, which was the Uppercase I and the lowercase i.

We got really sweaty in gym today, it was fun! We are taking home some home reading bags today, please bring them bag everyday,  as we will use them in class as well! Thank you :)

September 18th, 2014

Today we continued to practice one of our Daily 5's....we are learning to read to self and where we are allowed to do that in the class. We drew a picture and wrote at least one sentence about our book.

We listened to the story "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" by Dr. Seuss. We learned that some things can be a little scary, but we also learned to keep on going no matter what!

We had a lot of fun in Physical Education today! We ran LOTS!!!!

It is MEET THE TEACHER tonight and tomorrow! If you have yet to make your appointment, please do so! I look forward to meeting you all!

Please remember to send in your child's SWIMMING FORMS, they were due today and we are still missing 6. Thank you to those who sent theirs in already.

We also need the "Digital Citizenship" form signed by you and your child returned to class!

Tomorrow morning there will be a Pancake Breakfast at 7am. It will be out front of the school if the weather is nice, which we hope it will be :)

We listened to a story today called, "I Need My Monster!" Ask me about one of the monsters in the story!
