November is over already?

Scholastic Orders are due tomorrow.

Please sign up to meet with me on Thursday evening or Friday morning. There is no school for students on Friday!

We have a WINNER!!!!! It seems that Mr. Shackelton...our new grade 3/4 teacher, will be dressing up in an outfit that the Grade 2's get to choose. It was a close race and he won by only 2 votes (won? lost? same thing?) We raised $389 as a whole school. Thank you so much for all your donations. The grade 1's were close behind the grade 2's with donations. Great Job Everyone!

We had Literacy Centres and Math Centres! We did some tricky words in phonics and we have new Spelling words for the week. We will have a practice sheet sent home today and it does not need to be returned! Our Spelling words are:

School Swag for Sale

I completely forgot to let you know about the school t-shirts and jackets we have for sale! There are sample sizes in the office to try on. Monday is the LAST DAY to order! Please forgive me! If you would like a t-shirt for yourself or your child, or your sister-in-law's cousin, twice removed. Please send in your order form on Monday! I can help find the right size for anyone in my class!

Today we had our first Spelling Review! Everyone did fairly well! If your child has brought home some yellow cards on a ring, they are to practice saying and spelling those words. Each day they practice and get it right, they get a check mark! After 5 check marks, they can stop practicing!

I've also sent home the review page for you to review! Some students need to practice different things and it will say on their page what that is! Thanks for your support!

Also remember to sign up for Conferences. They are next Thursday evening and Friday morning!

We worked on our sentences today during our Student of the Day. Some students are beginning to create their own sentences. We also worked on the phonics long u sound when written as "ue". Your children are doing an amazing job and it warms my heart to be able to see them finally understand something and also to see the wheels moving in their brains. I know I can't really see their brains, but man oh man, I swear I can.

They worked on their Winter Concert song today and they are going to sound absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!!

We sorted our crayons today, a little Math and organization skills!!! Some of us had no crayons and some had waaaaay too many :) We are all sorted now!

Mrs. Nelson was sick today! We had a fabulous sub, Ms. Fillmore! I am sure all the students had a wonderful time with her.

Picture retakes are tomorrow, November 18th.  Students are asked to bring their original proof sheets to the camera if possible, so that the photographer can then see how to improve the photos for the students.  We will also do photos of any students who didn’t have their pictures taken on original photo day.

Stay Healthy :)

The new Scholastic Order forms came out and I will do my final order of 2015 on December 1st. That will hopefully give enough time for books to be mailed. If you are using any as a present, please let me know and I will hide it in a bag for you! :)

We started our Home Reading Program today! Please review the letter and strategies in the yellow folder!

We worked on some writing to do with our cute baby pictures. A few of us still need to bring in our cute pictures! Thanks for your support!!

Good Afternoon! We have 3 staff members who are participating in MOVEMBER! They are all growing moustaches in support of Movember which is an organization dedicated to promoting mens health and finding a cure for prostate cancer.

To help raise funds the three of them will have a little competition in which students and staff can vote for a small donation.

Each vote will cost $1.00 and you can vote as often as you like. You are voting for the one of us you believe has the worst stache. Each week some Mavericks will update a poster located in the front of the school with how many votes each person has. I am asking students to give their donations to their home room teacher.  On the last day of November we will determine who has the most votes and the class that raised the most money will get to choose an outfit of their choice that the losing teacher will have to wear all day on Monday Dec 7th. But we can only make the silliness a goal if we raise $300 as a whole school. That's less than $1 per student!

Let's help raise money for Prostate Cancer!!!!!!!

Today, we had another fire drill. This time it wasn't as cold and we didn't have to stay out as long. We did a GREAT job!

THANK YOU to all that donated food to the Mavericks to reach their goal. I hope they made it. I will update you next week about their success!

Happy Monday....err we mean Thursday! It felt a lot like a Monday today! We practiced our phonics this morning and had a long chat about Fire Alarm/Drill Safety and Lockdown Safety.

We had an unexpected Fire Drill due to a mechanical issue with the system. The fire department was at our school before everyone was outside to our meeting point. It was nice to know they quickly respond! We had to stay outside for while the Fire Department checked our school and it took a long time. We were pretty chilly. As soon as we got into class we put our jackets on and warmed up while we chatted.

On that note, please help your child to wear a long sleeve shirt or have a sweater to wear in case we have another alarm when it is chilly!

We exchanged our Library books today! Please take time to read them with your child and help them find words that they know.

Scholastic Orders are due tomorrow! Please send in what you have. I will send home our December order forms soon and do a final order before Christmas. (Already???)

Dear Parents:

The Calgary Firefighters Toy Association hosts an annual Christmas party for families who may require some form of assistance during the festive season. If you feel you may need some support this holiday season and would like your children to be considered to attend the party on December 20th at the Stampede Corral, please pick up a form at the office and return to Karon Hayes, Assistant Principal. Please note this is only for children 12 years of age or younger. There are a maximum number of children that can be accepted and applicants are chosen on a first come first serve basis. If you have any questions, please contact Karon at (403) 777-6610. There is a deadline for applications so please contact Karon no later than Wednesday, November 18, 2015.

Respectfully,
Karon Hayes, Assistant Principal, Beddington Heights School

Today we had our Remembrance Day Assembly to remember those who fought for us and who still fight for us. It was a lovely assembly. Please take time with your child to have a moment of silence tomorrow at about 11 am. We will still accept donations for poppies until Friday.

There is still time to bring in food donations. We have until Friday. The Mavericks goal can be reached if we each bring 2 or 3 items.

Mr. Sadowsky came into our class this morning and read us a story about a pig that loves buttered toast. It was funny!

Today we continued to work on our Flanders Field picture. We finished coloring our poppies with crayon and then we painted over top of them with green watercolor. They look beautiful!

We practiced some yoga this afternoon after we finished our art! We received a book today from the TD Bank. Every student in Canada will receive this book. It is a story full of imagination.

Library day on Thursday.

First Snowfall!

Well I think it's official. We had our first real snowfall last night and today. Just a reminder that students need mitts and toques and maybe a scarf to keep warm. Snowpants are fine as well, but they do take a while for children to put on. Help them practice this at home.

Our Remembrance Day Assembly is tomorrow at 10:35/40 ish until 11:25am. You are most welcome to come and share in the spirit of remembering those who have fought and still do fight for us. Students will receive a sticker poppy and donations are gladly accepted.

Please send or bring a food bank donation and lets help our Maverick Leadership team reach their goal.

Important Dates:
Nov 10 - Remembrance Day Assembly from 10:30-11:30
Nov 11 - No school
Nov 13 - Scholastic Order Due
Nov 20 - No school

Friday, November 6, 2015

We had a busy day! We worked on our Literacy and Math Centres, we practiced our phonics by saying their sounds, listening to songs and saying a word with the sound in it. We also had PE, we made some tissue paper Poppies for our Remembrance Day Celebration and then we had quiet free time! It was a lovely day!

We are getting really good at reading and will soon start our Home Reading program. Reading daily to your child will help them greatly. Help them search for words or sounds that they already know. Also helping your child write their name with lowercase letters will help them learn their lowercase letters. (except the first initial of course, that's always uppercase)!

Please remember to send in Food Bank donations by Tuesday. The Maverick Leadership team, would like to line all the hallways of the school with food! Please help them accomplish their goal.

Have a WONDERFUL weekend!

Nov 10 - Remembrance Day Assembly - at about 10:30-11:30 (time to be narrowed down soon.)

We celebrated a birthday today and Mickey Mouse wished our friend a Happy Birthday!

We had library today, and most of us are bringing home 2 books to share with you. We can keep them for the whole weekend and bring them back next week. A few of us still need to return our books, this is a friendly reminder. :)

We did literacy centres today and number order and we had Music and PE. Days just seem to whiz right by. Mrs. Nelson also read us a funny story. It was called "More Parts". It was about a boy who thought he had to give his hand to his Dad when his Dad said, "Give me a hand." The little boy didn't realize the Dad just wanted his help. It was super silly!

We logged on to Raz Kids with a friend and we got to listen to, read and take a quiz on a few stories. Mrs. Nelson is sending home our login information. They have been laminated to safeguard them from spills. :)

Picture money is due on November 6th if you are ordering pictures.

Mrs. Nelson is sending home more Scholastic Order forms. The due date will be on November 13th. I will do one more order before Christmas, probably the first week of December.

Today we discussed playground safety and that we must use our scarves or mitten or toque string appropriately. We talked about not tying anything to the playground equipment because it could put us in danger. Please discuss with your child as you feel prompted.

Today we were able to explore our Literacy Centres and Mrs. Nelson continued to show us some of our new Math Centres. We should be able to be in full swing with our centres next week. This gives opportunity for Mrs. Nelson to work with us in small groups or 1:1with each of us to help us in our specific areas.

We had a new student start with us yesterday and he fits in already! It's like he has always been apart of our class.

The Mavericks of Beddington (Grade 6 Leadership group) are collecting non perishable food items for the food bank until Nov.10th.  If you would like to send it with your child that would be lovely, or if you are coming to the assembly on November 10th at approximately 10:30am, you can bring it with you then.
