We will be starting our Building Things Science Unit soon. We will need gift boxes or shoe box to help us with this project. A gift box will provide 2 students with a enclosure for their animal.

We are going on a Field Trip on Tuesday May 24th. It is the first day back after a 4 day break. We will need a few volunteers, so please let me know if you can. I will send home a form as always closer to the date.

Scholastic Orders are coming home today! Scholastic is going to send us a whole whack of prizes if our class has a minimum of $50 ordered. Let's go for it!!!!! For every child who orders, they will receive a prize from my collection! Lots of great books in these order forms. If you need a few extra dollars to help with your order please email me at milnelson@cbe.ab.ca to discuss it.

The orders are due back on Monday, April 11th.

I hope you all had a lovely break! We got right back into the swing of things here in Room 5!

We had spelling this morning, but it looks like most students forgot to bring home their slip. The words are:

Over Spring Break as I sat with one of my sons and read each day, I wanted to reiterate the importance of reading to and with your child each day! It helps your child to learn expression and fluency as they hear others reading. Remember that RAZ kids is a great program to have your child practice on every few days.

We met with our buddies this afternoon and had a great time hearing what they did for Spring Break, telling them what we did and of course reading a few books.

We started a journal today about what we did on Spring Break. We brainstormed our first sentence and then we had to create 2 more sentences on our own. Writing will be a prime focus for the end of Grade 1.

Remember to get those Jump Rope for Heart pledge forms filled up and handed in by Thursday. They are being picked up by a Jump Rope Volunteer on Friday! Thanks for all your hard work in making it a success!

We had a wonderful day today! Our student who is leaving had lots of great ideas for us to do. We read books, did some Math, went to PE and had Literacy Centres with the Grade 2's.

This afternoon we did an AWESOME Science experiment. We were blindfolded, plugged our nose and then tasted 2 different pieces of food. They were really similar and it was difficult to decide what each were. Our thoughts for #1 were:
apple, pineapple, potato and carrot
Our thoughts for #2 were: apple, pineapple, lemon, mango and potato

Ask your child what #1 was and what #2 was! We then got to taste each again using our eyes and not plugging our nose.

Tomorrow we will be celebrating St. Patricks Day! Please try to wear something that is green!!! We didn't make any Leprachaun traps, but I think the Leprauchaun may be visiting our classroom!

Library books are due TOMORROW!!!! Please return any books you may have! We wrote down a book title from the book fair and how much it costs. If you choose, you may send the money with your child to purchase, or you may purchase it when you come for your Conference.

Tomorrow we are saying Good bye to one of our classmates. :(
 They are going to a new school. Tomorrow will be all about that student. We will do everything that students wants to do!

We will do some St. Patricks Day celebrating on Thursday! Wear green!!!!

Happy Pi Day

Good Afternoon!

We don't learn about Pi in grade 1, but it's a fun day to celebrate with Pie! What's your favorite pie? Mine is Strawberry Rhubarb! Hope you enjoy if you're celebrating!

This morning the students attended a Jump Rope for Heart Assembly.We are helping to raise money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. There should be some fundraising information coming home this evening. Please look for it. I was away today, so if it was not sent home, we will make sure it gets sent home on Tuesday!

You can go online and create an account so you can collect donations online. It is very easy and your account gets $5 just for signing up and you also get a free skipping rope. The fundraising forms are due back to school on Friday, April 1st (April Fool's Day). No joke though, the forms are due back the first Friday after we return from Spring Break!

The book fair starts tomorrow. We will go as a class to check it out and write down any books we want and their costs. Purchases can be made on Thursday morning or any day money is brought in.

Please bring all library books back Wednesday. We will not be signing out new books this week.

Tonight is the Parent Council Dance. Pizza and a pop will be sold for $3 a slice. We hope you can support this activity and all the hard work that has been put in to it.

This morning we learned how to look at a picture and make up our own Math problem. We will continue to work on this. We had our last day of basketball in PE today.

We had library and are bringing home a new book to read with you. Next week is our Scholastic Book Fair. Tuesday - Friday. Students may bring money for this event.

This afternoon we learned how to read with our fingers. It is called Braille. We wrote our names and learned about the Braille alphabet. Then we used split peas to create our name in Braille.

Tomorrow is Library Day! Please ensure your child has their library books in their backpack to be handed in tomorrow. Thank you to those who have already returned their books.

We continued to work on our Poem actions with the Grade 2's today and then most of us presented to the whole class. Tomorrow our other 2 groups will present.

This afternoon we learned about our sense of sight. We watched a video about students who are legally blind and then we took a blind walk through our Learning Commons. We learned that people who are blind can still read, but it's a little different. We will be doing more activities around this before Spring Break.

Parent Council Dance is TOMORROW!!! 6-8pm in the School Gymnasium

NO FUN LUNCH THIS MONTH!!!

My apologies. I read it in a memo for Teachers, but there is NO Fun Lunch this month. Sorry for the confusion.

Today we worked on a poem and got together in a group to act it out. We worked on a Math Problem that had a lot of ways to solve it.

This afternoon we learned about different tastes on the tongue and then we got to taste the 4 different tastes. Ask your child what 1 of the 4 tastes was.

Conferences are next Thursday and Friday.

Spring Break is fast approaching! Last day for students is March 17th and they will return on March 29th.

This morning we did Math with dice, play-doh and a ten frame. Then we had PE and Recess.

We had library after that, so look for our new books coming home. Some students still have overdue books. They will be bringing home a notice. 

This afternoon we talked about our Community, City, Province, Country and World. We looked at a map on the Smartboard. Then we had Music and reading buddies.

Scholastic will be due on March 7th. Hopefully we can get the order back before March Break!

Mrs. Nelson was missing today. We had Mrs. Fillmore in today. I am sure the kids had a wonderful time with her.
