Jersey Day!!!!

We had a GREAT Jersey Day!!! Thank you to everyone that was able to participate!

This morning we read a book with the Grade 2's about Saving Energy! Electricity, gas, propane...that kind of energy. Our own energy is fine. We have to spend 30 minutes this evening without using any energy except from our own body! Try to play a board game without the lights on (maybe a candle?) or walk to a park and play frisbee. No TV, tablets/iPads, computers, video games etc...

I'm sure you will all be able to do an excellent job!

Mrs. Nelson will be away tomorrow. Please remind your child to be respectful and listen to the substitute teacher!

2) Our Community Library Box in the front foyer of our school. You can look in there for a book you may like or leave your books for others to enjoy!

We will have a 10 word Spelling Review this Friday with last weeks and this weeks words.

In PE we are continuing to work on throwing and catching. This is a great evening activity to do with your child. Remember when throwing, your opposite foot from your throwing arm is forward. For example, I throw with my right hand, so I take a step forward with my left foot!

We read a story about Spring and continued to discuss, Text-to-Text, Text-to-Self and Text-to-World. Ask your child what one of these means.

In Math we are learning about 2D and 3D shapes! We made a shape today. Ask your child what the shape is. Your child's homework is to find a shape in your home that is the same as the shape they made. If it is recyclable, they can bring the shape to school, otherwise, please take a picture and email me! milnelson@cbe.ab.ca

They get 1 card for every 100 minutes they read! I include minutes at school, but to earn more cards they must read at home as well. Everything counts! Read them the newspaper, your favourite book or have them read to you! It all counts. Please use the form I sent home to record their minutes!

MATH SHOWCASE TONIGHT!!!!!

I really hope we will get to see you tonight! We have some amazing games to play with you. Your child learned all of them this morning and they tell me they are AWESOME!

See you between 6-8pm!

After we learned all about the games, we did some Math, ate snack and danced our little hearts out! We miss gym on these short days, but dancing really gets our hearts pumping!

Earth Week!!!!

Today we watched a video about Recycling and how we can use things to make new things instead of putting them in the recycling or garbage. On Wednesday afternoon, we will be building our own creation out of recycling! If you could please send in any of the following:

milk jugs or cartons
egg cartons
soup cans
cereal boxes
bottles and their tops
toilet paper or paper towel rolls
glass jars and lids
or anything else you think could be used!

These recycled items will be used for ALL students! Thanks so much!

Our new Spelling words for this week are:
when - "wh" blend and "en" word family
live - red word
lot - word family (dot, robot, got, hot, not, pot, rot)
morning - practice the "ing"
thing - practice the "ing"

Yoga for those students who signed up is tomorrow. Our first one. Please make sure your child is wearing appropriate clothing for yoga (i.e.: no dresses or skirts)

Today was a jam packed day! We had our Spelling Review this morning and will get our yellow cards to practice on Monday. Parent's---- PLEASE HELP YOUR CHILD FIND THEIR LOST YELLOW CARDS!!!!! These cards helps us learn to spell and say our spelling words. If your child doesn't bring them to school, they miss out on practicing their additional cards.

Reading: Give It A Shot! Is in full swing! Each student has received at least 1 card. We read lots at school. You can also keep track of minutes read at home. Any reading counts, whether your child does it or you read to them. Keep track of it and hopefully they can earn all 24 Calgary Flames Hockey Cards and play in the Floor Hockey game against the Teachers!

We wrote a few sentences after lunch about what we want to do this weekend and then we had Fidget Friday, looked at our new outdoor recess equipment, had Music and then had Reading Buddies! We of course finished our Friday with a Dance Party and we were having so much fun we almost missed the bell.

Today we continued Math Centres and Ms. Cokar, the Kindergarten teacher came to observe us. We then used Self-Assessment to decided how well we knew each centre! 

We exchanged our Library Books for the week. Please read them with me and help me find words that I know!

This afternoon we did some more writing, Mrs. Nelson says we will do it EVERYDAY right after lunch! We are almost ready for Grade 2. Then we did our Think-Outside-the-Box and then went to Music! We finished the day with some GoNoodle.

Today we did Special Math Centres! We are almost through them all. We will continue to work on them tomorrow. They were: patterning, tangrams, ice cream cones, 3D shapes and making numbers.

We finally had Music today! We sure missed it the last 2 days.

We have been doing DEAR, which stands for, Drop Everything And Read! This helps us earn minutes towards our hockey cards!!! We sent home a form to help you keep track. You can either use the form or your child's home reading form!


We have a Community Library Box located in the front foyer of the school. If you have ANY books you or your child no longer read, please feel free to send them to school for our Community Library Box. How it works is: if you need a book, then take one. If you have a book, then leave one! Pretty fantastic little box!

We had a super busy day. This morning we worked on our Spelling words using our Word Work Centres!  We love it so much! Then we had PE and Recess. 

We read a story about Smelly Nellie. We learned that some people don't like nicknames they are given and that we should always ask them first! We also did some Kitty Yoga! It was so silly!

This afternoon we did some more writing and then had Math Centres. We went on a quick shape walk and found lots of shapes in our hallways at school.

Today we had an assembly called READING! GIVE IT A SHOT!!!!! For every 100 minutes that your child reads, they will get a Calgary Flames Hockey Card! If they get 24 Hockey Cards, they will be able to play in the Student vs. Teacher Floor Hockey Game. We will send home a tracking sheet  on Monday that needs to be completed so that your child can earn Hockey Cards and participate in the Hockey Game next month.

Any reading will count. Reading we do at school, home reading and even when you read to your child. It all counts!!!!

Scholastic Orders are due on Monday!!!! Please help us earn the rewards!!!

Today we had Literacy Centres with the Grade 2 class, we went outside for PE and we had our Spelling Review.

Tuesday Funday!

Today we played with Wikki Stix...they were the highlight of the day! They look like candy, but we didn't eat any! Ask your child what they created with theirs!

We played Math Centres and had Music with Mr. Rattan this afternoon as well. We are getting so great at adding and subtracting. We have also learned our song for our Spring Concert!

Please bring Library books back tomorrow (Wednesday) so that we can get them all checked in and ready to go for our Library day on Thursday! Thanks so much for your help with this. It makes our Librarians job so much easier!

Mrs. Nelson is wondering!!!! In June we will be going on a field trip to the Calgary Zoo. We are trying to make the cost as affordable as possible. The bus only fits the students, teachers and a couple volunteers. Would parents that Volunteer for this field trip be ok with carpooling to the Zoo on the day of our Field Trip? We would most definitely pay for your parking! Paying $8 for a vehicle to park vs. $200 or so for a bus is such a huge difference. Please email me at milnelson@cbe.ab.ca if you could be a volunteer driver for this trip. I believe we will be going on June 7th.

Today during Science we smelled a lot of smells! It was hard to figure out some of them. Ask your child what some of the smells were! Go on a smelling hunt this evening. See what smells you can smell! Please only smell things that will not harm you. 

We worked on Math Centres this morning. Some have addition and some are subtraction and a 10 frame game!

If your child plays a prank on you, I apologize now!!!! But I hope you were able to pull a prank on them. The "Brown E's" are always a big hit at my house!

Today we had our Spelling review, Fidget Friday with the play-doh Mrs. Nelson made over Spring Break and Math Centres! We read lots of stories, had a fire drill and talked about Quiet Activities we can do if we finish our work a few minutes early.
